Jersey’s

Jersey's

This old barn has never actually been used as a barn while I have lived in this area – which is over 30 years. For the first 10 years or so, it appeared to be abandoned. Then I noticed some renovation work that went on for over 5 years. Then it became a reasonably good country pub called, not surprisingly, The Old Barn. That lasted for 5 or 6 years years and then closed. Since then there has been a succession of owners each one of shorter duration until it folded a few years ago and has remained for sale since then. The farmhouse burned to the ground a few years ago and the land around what was the barnyard (and is now a parking lot for the pub) has been turned into a quarry.

Hackberry grove

tmptitle

I spent some time here yesterday after Simba went to the vet for the last time. It is a grove of Common Hackberry trees near the river. Although not common this far north of Lake Erie, there used to be a number of Hackberry groves in the Ottawa area where local conditions were favourable. Most are gone because of urban pressure and this is one of the few remain groves in Eastern Ontario. If I can find some seedlings, I will plant a grove of them near where my two cats are buried in the yard. Maybe they can fertilize another grove.

Last shot of Simba

tmptitle

I know there have been a number of shots of Simba recently. This will be the last one. I had tried to shoo this frog from my deck before Simba saw him. The frog wouldn’t cooperate and Simba pounced and carried him around, not quite sure how we was going to finish him off. Fortunately the frog escaped before Simba figured it out.

Walking the dogs

Walking the dogs

This is another scene along the Mississippi River in Carleton place: the railroad underpass and narrow road leading to the back bridges – single lane bridges across the river – all providing a quiet area to walk your dog. It’s strange, people walk dogs but you never hear of dog walks and yet people rarely walk cats but there are catwalks.

Vanishing point

tmptitle

Carleton Place was once served by trains. Now the train station is a day care centre and the main track right-of-way into Ottawa is a bike path. This track, that recently carried freight through the town (without stopping), is now lying idle and slowly rusting.

Doggy take 2

tmptitle

Bonnie liked this version of the dog in the window better than the one I posted yesterday. I liked yesterday’s version because of the way the dog’s head formed a triangle that matched the triangle formed by the gap between the cat and the dog on the towel. Bonnie liked this one because the (real) dog was looking at the viewer who could see both his ears. What do you think?

Doggy in the window

tmptitle

I’ve seen a dog in this window across the street several times recently while at The Good Food Company. This is the first time I’ve managed to get a picture.

Not doing so well

tmptitle

Simba has cancer. It is in the form of a tumor in the soft tissue under his tongue. It hurts him to use or stick out his tongue. He’s not able to eat very well and can’t groom himself.

The vet and I discussed treatment options, but they seem very difficult. Simba would end up with no tongue and all or part of his jaw removed and then be on chemo. He’s 16 years old. I think the treatment would kill him, and if not, the quality of his remaining life would be very poor. I think Simba’s time is nigh.

Simba is a unique and wonderful cat.

I am heartbroken.

Appleton dam

tmptitle

This scene is a view of the dam in the village of Appleton on the Mississippi River near my home. The dam is not that imposing or interesting, However, I thought the plant life amazing given that the point were I am standing is immersed in a raging torrent of freezing water every spring. Nature does seem to have the power to spring back. I hope that’s a good sign.
