Last trip for a while

tmptitle

For the past few months I have been travelling to Toronto every second Tuesday to take part a seminar given by Landmark Education. This picture I took as I left home to attend the last session of the seminar. I took the picture at 12:11 and the GPS shows me arriving around 4:20. There was usually another 30 minutes of rest stops and other delays. That means each seminar session involved about 9 hours travel, plus any time I spent in Toronto having supper or simply allowance for delays. Over the 10 sessions of the seminar, we became a community of people who cared for each other and took joy in each other accomplishments and supported each other in difficulty. As I started this last trip, I did feel a sense of accomplishment having attended all the sessions I committed to. However, I felt and still feel wistful that I would no longer be part of that community.

Despite the travel time, I found the seminar to be richly rewarding and worth every minute of travel time. I won’t take another seminar right away, but I will sometime in the not too distant future. I am going to attend a weekend course with Landmark in November.

Patterson & Son

tmptitle

Carleton Place is preserving many of it’s old commercial signs even though the businesses are no longer with us. With the arrival of the big box stores on the outskirts, the smaller local businesses are struggling and keeping our heritage alive is one strategy the town is using to keep the downtown attractive and vibrant.

Bulrushes and lens flare

tmptitle

This is the result of shooting some bulrushes in my backyard while the sun was setting. I was shooting towards the sun but with the sun just outside the field of view. The idea was to try to use lens flare as an artistic component of the shot. The round bright spots in the trees I think are caused by flare.

No Drops

tmptitle

It rained heavily for a brief period this morning and then the sun came out. I thought, “Great!, I’ll go take a picture of my cone flowers covered with nice sparkly beads of rain drops.”

It was not to be. I wasn’t quick enough or the cone flowers shed water too efficiently. There’s one drop under the one of the petals. No beads. Maybe cone flowers are designed to shed water efficiently. I guess I’ll have to use a water mister or improve my Photoshop skills.

Pig Roast Entertainment

tmptitle

The entertainment for the evening was provided by Brock Zeman a local Carleton Place boy who is making a name for himself as a singer/songwriter. His voice and lyrical style sort of remind me of John Prine with a bit more edge to his lyrics. A number of his songs have local references which adds to his local popularity.

By the time Brock started, it was getting dark so the image is not as sharp as I would have liked.

Jeff Webster Memorial Pig Roast

tmptitle

This past weekend I was at the 2nd annual Jeff Webster Memorial Pig Roast. The event is a fund raiser for the Ottawa Heart Institute hosted and organized by Jeff’s brother Chad. Jeff was the son of my friend Dave. Dave and I used to be business partners in the old days when I worked for a living. Jeff passed away very unexpectedly in 2006.

The event was a wonderful mixture of family and friends, young and old. It had a “North of 7” flavour, which, if you were from Lanark would know that refers to a local (part of Lanark County north of Highway 7) redneck style with a Canadian flavour – think nice polite rednecks having a good time. The image above has Chad (on the left) and a friend, checking out the pig.

The event was a blast. Next year, I won’t drink quite so much beer.

The Garden Path

tmptitle

This is another shot from our guided tour on our last day in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Although it looks like it, I would never lead Bonnie down the garden path.

And yes, this image breaks another blog rule. I didn’t take the picture. But in my defense, it was taken with my camera and by our tour guide, Carla, of Niagara Nature Tours
