Lakeside Park Carousel

tmptitle

There’s not much you can buy for 5 cents these days. That fact was just driven home when I looked for and couldn’t find the cents symbol on my keyboard. I suspect your best 5 cent deal is the ride on the Lakeside Park Carousel in St. Catherines, ON. The carousel is over 100 years old and has been restored to beautiful condition. It’s not in perfect condition. There are signs of wear and scratches here and there. That’s because there are kids (young and old) on it all the time. Not all the rides are horses. There’s a menagerie of animals including the lion. This guy is an original. There is another lion on the carousel that is a modern replacement for one that was destroyed. I hope he didn’t have to be put down.

Iron Lady

tmptitle

This is another shot from our guided tour yesterday. We actually spent more time looking at gardens and historical things than wineries. One visit we made was to The Iron Garden, essentially the yard of a couple who sell metal garden ornaments, furniture and other similar items, all used, that they purchase all over North America. I liked this statue in its context. I thought of purchasing it, but then I realized she was never going to fit in the back seat of my car.

Stainless steel fermentation vessels

tmptitle

We actually hired a guide today to take us around the area and show us some things we might not otherwise find and to drive my car so we could taste wines without any DUI risk. We visited the Ravine Vineyard for lunch. They don’t have a large selection of wines yet, but their Cab Merlot was very tasty. They also have a bakery and the restaurant that is normally open only for lunch, has a BBQ every Friday and Monday evenings. I’d definitely go back there if the chance comes along.

We also visited Jackson Triggs winery for a tour. It was the first winery tour I had ever done and it was mildly interesting. The tour included a wine tasting. The wines weren’t as interesting as the tour. The winery was interesting from a photographic perspective, especially all the stainless steel vats and piping in the fermentation room. The image above is of the stainless steel fermentation vessels with their cooling jackets that keep the must at a constant temperature. The temperature depends on the type of wine fermenting.

Fuzzy leaves

tmptitle

Today we visited old town Niagara-on-the-Lake. We had a takeout hotdog lunch, took in a play at theShaw Festival, wandered the main drag, had some ice cream and visited a winery for dinner. The main street is bedecked in flowers and colorful folliage. With all the planters and people, it was hard to move around without bumping into something or someone. I quite liked the plant with the fuzzy colourful leaves in the image. I’ll have to take this picture to a garden centre to find out what it is so I can get one for home. I imagine it will have to be an indoor plant here near Ottawa.

Southern tip of Pelee Island

tmptitle

It seems the most southern part of Canada is occupied by gulls. I had hoped to reach the southern extremity of Canada, but alas, this was not quite it. The spit I was on ended here only temporarily and then resurfaced about 300 metres farther out in the lake. Not only that, there is another smaller island, Middle Island that is even further south by about 3 km. So I haven’t been to any extremity of Canadian sovereignty yet, but this is the closest I’ve managed.

Rainy departure

tmptitle

As we arrived at the ferry dock to leave Pelee Island, we could see a thunderstorm approaching across the water. It was the last ferry of the day and a lot of people were trying to leave the island. We could see that the ferry would probably not arrive before the storm. Fortunately the ferry dock staff could see that too and rushed us through ticketing and shooed us off to a shelter near the dock where the ferry would arrive. The sides of the building were open so we weren’t completely sheltered from the rain, but it did provide an opportunity to get a shot of the storm on the water.

Vines and Turbines

tmptitle

It was very very hot and humid today, so we decided to forgo bike riding and travel around to a few wineries in air conditioned comfort. We tasted a few wines, bought fewer, and had lunch with a glass of wine on a patio on the lake shore. One winery we stopped at, Spruce Grove, was near these large wind turbines. There are lots of protest signs up around the area showing that the wind turbines aren’t popular, especially plans to place some out on the lake (Erie). Maybe the locals would prefer a nuclear power generating station in their neighbourhood.

Blackie

tmptitle

Bonnie and I are visiting Leamington, ON and area – Pt. Pelee, Pelee Island. The B&B we are staying at is very quiet, comfortable and has a very friendly host. Most of all, however, it is blessed with this very friendly (almost) black cat – think very dark brown. His name is Blackie.

James Hunter

tmptitle

Here’s another picture from our trip to the Ottawa 2010 Bluesfest. This performer is James Hunter who we heard (discovered) the last time we were at Bluesfest (3 years ago). His show was the reason we decided to go Saturday night and we weren’t disappointed. As good as Hunter was, Carolyn Wonderland was the highlight of the evening.

Caroline Wonderland

tmptitle

Bonnie and I enjoyed the Ottawa Bluesfest this past weekend. We stayed mainly at the blues stage as opposed to the main (pop/rock) stages. It’s really not a blues festival anymore – as in the good old days when there would be separate stages for different kinds of blues. Oh well. The benefit this year was that because the audience at the blues stage was smaller, we could get closer to the performers. Caroline Wonderland is a phenomenal musician. If you ever get a chance to see her play, take it.
