Several years ago when my grandson Chris and I were playing in the Mississippi River near my home, I noticed some patterns of light in the water. I took pictures of them and got some quite remarkable images. We were around (and under) the bridge that takes you onto the island where I live. These reflections were only visible in bright sunlight and only when viewed from under the bridge.
I went there today, hoping to use one of these images for my blog. The sky was clear and and bright – just a perfect day. Unfortunately, by the time I got there the sun had gone too low in the sky and the reflections were not as vivid. I’ll have to go back another day. However, I was in the water under the bridge with my camera, so I took this shot. When I got home I used Photoshop to give it a slightly mystical look using something called the Orton effect.
If you’re curious about what that is, Google will help.
These flowers are in my perennial garden. I’ve no idea what they’re called. I thought I’d try scanning a bouquet of them. However, the flowers are very soft and with the weight of the stems, they flatten and don’t look interesting lying on the scanner’s bed. So, I cut the flowers off the stem and arranged them in a little pile and scanned them that way.
I had to scan them with the cover off the scanner of course. That’s why everything is black except for the flowers.
Last night I worked late preparing salad ingredients for our annual Marmitons (a men’s cooking club) BBQ. I was on the salad team. We were preparing for 60 people. However, my salad isn’t the one shown above. It wasn’t as photogenic.
Ron, my partner on the team made this very pretty cucumber and tomato salad. Too bad it doesn’t taste as good as it looks. Then again, in my opinion, anything with cucumbers has to have a lot of yogurt and garlic if it’s going to taste good.
While busy getting ready for a barbeque tomorrow, I realized it was already tomorrow and I had not taken a picture today (OK, yesterday) so I decided to make an arbitrary and permanent ruling. From now on, each day starts when I get up for the day and each day ends when the new day starts (just in case I figure out how to take a picture while sleeping). Note that this rule is worded deliberately to leave it slightly ambiguous as to whether the day starts if I happen to get up for a pee at 5:00AM.
This picture was taken at 4:30AM and I hadn’t gone to bed yet. It took a “few” tries to get the exposure right and to keep still while illuminating myself.
I was in Ottawa today for a Little Angels http://www.little-angels.ca board meeting (shameless plug) and had some extra time. Now that I drag my cameras everywhere with me I can take advantage of these little opportunities. The next step is to write down places to shoot when I think of them so I can make better use of these little time slots.
I walked through the park with no objective in mind. What struck me was all these picnic tables waiting for visitors. This park must be hopping on nice weekends.
This cast iron pan was heating up on my stove. I was rushing, trying to get all parts of my meal to come together at once. Before I could sauté the garlic, I heard this loud bang as if something had fallen on the glass stove top. When I investigated, I found this cracked pan.
Time for a new pan. I didn’t like this one anyway.
While I was in Ottawa today I was passed by a gang scooter riders. They were all on modern Vespa rides except for the two leaders of the pack who had vintage Lambrettas – much cooler.
