Bike Day

9300786

We decided today would be a bike day. Also, we decided to bike back to the Berlinische Gallerie that had not been open on Tuesday when we were there. It was, for me, a bit of an adventure because I was not used to biking in traffic. I soon became accustomed to the bike lanes and traffic (but not the cobblestones) and only once did I almost run down a pedestrian. Surprisingly, to me anyway, we got to the gallery in about 45 minutes. Also to my surprise and joy they even honoured our discount resulting from having visited the Jewish Museum, even though we had forgotten to bring our ticket stubs. What was most surprising was to enter the first exhibit and to find Aidan there in the crowd. Before he could turn around I took his picture. Of course when I did manage to get another shot, I realized it wasn’t Aidan in person…

and in fact it wasn’t even this wasn’t even Aidan’s avatar.

It was saying something about the tension between interpreting an artistic work based on its historical context as opposed to somehow understanding the intent of its author. Of course all we know is that anything is art – whether or not it’s good art, that’s the question and just a matter of opinion.

We checked out some other people at the show, but they didn’t have anything much to add to the discourse.

So we left, and went for a bike ride through Tiergarten, where we got lost and had to check the map…

But we eventually found our way home, had a few beers, went out for supper and a visit to our favourite bar to play pool and have a few more beers.

Oranienburg

9290780

We went to Oranienburg today to visit Sachsenhausen, a monument and museum on the site of a former concentration camp. The site was also used by the Russians to imprison Nazis and other political prisoners after the war. It was very solemn experience and although I took some pictures, there are none I want to post here.

The picture above is a shot of the bicycle parking area at the Oranienburg train station. The trains here are amazing. For a trip of about 40km, it cost us each less than 3 euros to travel and took about 1 hour including one transfer. The trains are a wonderful tribute to the German obsession with efficiency.

Sachsenhausen was all about efficiency too. Just not so wonderful.

Jewish Museum and (not) Berlinische Gallerie

9280731

This is a shot from where we didn’t get to, today. It was closed. Unlike all other galeries, this one is closed Tuesdays and open Mondays. Drat! We did get to the Jewish Museum and spent too much time there. I think I’ve had enough museums for a few days at least.

9280724

The image above is from the Jewish Museum and has a reference to a historically important Jewish Berlin business Kadewe or Kaufhaus des Westens (Department Store of the West). It was started in 1905 by a Jewish businessman. The history of the store and it’s Jewish ownership roughly parallels that of the Jews themselves. The museum describes the history of the Jews in Germany from medieval time until today.

The museum is worth visiting, but like the Pergamon yesterday, I found the audio guide informative, but not easy to match to exhibits.

Pergamon Visit

9270668

Today I visited the Berlin Pergamon Museum. I have now had my fill of antiquity for this trip. It was interesting and the audio guide informative, but 4 hours of friezes, sculpture, walls, gates, ceramics, glass, and rugs was enough.

Above is a reconstruction of the Pergamon Altar to Zeus.

Mauerpark Fleamarket

9260622Cr

We visited a Prenzlauerberg weekend tradition, the flea market in Mauerpark. It’s a huge market with lots of interesting things for sale, but lots of rubbish as well. It was a rainy day, but the rain held off for most of the 2 hours or so we spent at the market. Mauerpark was originally a rail yard up until the 1960s. The Berlin Wall ran through it. When the wall came down in 1989 the “people” claimed the area as a park. A few years later the city formally made it a park and named it Mauerpark. Aparently it can be very lively on weekend evenings. Some pictures of the flea market below.

After we left fleamarket (which is actually held in an area beside the park), we visited the Maurepark to see the graffitti on a remnant of the Berlin wall. Karen found a swing.

Dinner in Prenzlauerberg

IMG 1925

We had dinner in Prenzlauerberg (again) last night. I caught Karen in a pensive moment. We went home after dinner and went out for a stroll around 10:00. We found a few more interesting streets and a bar called Bluesbar, that had live music. It was packed and HOT! – barely enough room to stand.

Kreuzberg

9240550

We visited the Kreuszberg area of Berlin today. This shot was taken near Askanischer Platz, on our way from the train to see the Topgraphy des Terrors (a preserved section of the Berlin wall combined with a graphic monument describing the rise, the atrocities and the eventual fall of Nazism. Karen and I both found the exhibit to be factual but quite lacking in emotion and as a result gave no feeling of the horror that those years must have been. The images I took at the monument weren’t as colorful or interesting as this one.

Berliner Dom

9230477

This is another shot from yesterday when we visited museum island. This is the Berlin Cathedral (locally called the Berliner Dom) with the Berlin Communication Tower to the right. We didn’t go in the cathedral as there was an admission charge for an imminent concert. We did use the washrooms and there was an admission charge there too.

Fernsehturm and Marienkirche

9230531

We ventured into the centre of Berlin today. We started off with a 1 hour boat tour on the Spree river that meanders through the city. We also reconnoitred Musieum Island. It seems that when I visit the Pergamon Museum (antiquities) Karen might do something else. The image above is one shows one of what seems like millions of Berlin bike riders speeding along with the Fernsehturm (Communication Tower) and MarienKirsche (St. Mary’s Church) in the background.
